County is strategically located 30 minutes from the Jomo Kenyatta International
Airport, a regional gateway that connects Kenya to the regional and global
markets. Machakos is also located along
the Mombasa – Kampala highway. This strategic location, when compared to other
food-basket areas in Kenya, positions the county as easily accessible by both
road and air transport to facilitate hustle-free imports and exports.
The County borders Kenya’s Capital on the south, stretching to cover 6,208 sq. kms and sitting on an altitude of 1000 - 1600 meters above sea level. Machakos town serves as the county headquarters’ having been established in 1889 as the Kenya’s first administrative centre for the British colony.
The county’s breathtakingly scenic landscapes and beautiful terrains combine perfectly with patches of extensive savannah low plains that provide broad opportunities for a range of resource based economic activities.
The local climate is generally warm flowing from the colder hilly Machakos and Kathiani sub-counties to the hotter and drier outskirts of Masinga and Yatta. Recent county government initiatives have encouraged a bold move by the local community from a predominantly subsistence and fruit farming society to a more diversified society that is gradually leaning on leisure and conferencing businesses.
